We are having a busy winter here in Durham, Pennsylvania. The studio staff are working on printing the new edition by James Nares. You Don’t Say 1,2 and 3 are 3 variations of an elegant brushstroke. The edition will be complete in the next few weeks. The office is buzzing with art fair prepartions. Durham Press will be exhibiting at 3 fairs this spring. We will be in New York at  The Armory Show from March 8th through 11th, The Dallas Art Fair from April 13th to 15th and the Baltimore Museum of Art Print Fair the 27th through 29th of April. The Museum of Modern Art is hosting a panel discussion on Tuesday, January 24th, at 7:00 pm, which will include Mickalene Thomas. Conversations: Among Friends explores works of art as reflections of their political and social contexts. This program features a conversation between artists Derrick Adams, Clifford Owens, Xaviera Simmons, and Mickalene Thomas, with an introduction by Christopher Y. Lew, Assistant Curator, MoMA PS1.

Durham Press is pleased to announce a new series of prints by James Nares. You Don’t Say is currently in production and should be completed in late January. The prints will be signed so that they can be installed horizontally or vertically. This is the 8th project, since 2002, that James has worked on with Durham Press.

Paul Kasmin is currently presenting an exhibition of James’ work 1976: Movies, Photographs and Related Works on Paper. The exhibition will feature 5 films that James made in 1976. The exhibition runs from January 6th until February 11th, 2012. Check out Linda Yablonsky’s great review of the exhibition for the New York Times.

Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass has been delayed and re-routed due to permitting and bureaucracy. The boulder was scheduled to be delivered in to LACMA in October and open in November 2011. It remains in a California rock quarry waiting transportation. Click here to read an updated article from the New York Times. This video highlights the challenges of moving such a large singular piece of earth.

Heizer will be featured in End of the Earth: Land Art to 1974 at MOCA which runs from April until July 2012. The exhibition highlights the media and documentation practices used in Land Art. The media practices are an integral part of using the earth as an artistic medium. Double Negative, Heizer’s 1500 feet long trench, will be a primary focus of the exhibition. The exhibition will be accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue.

Iwona Blazwick OBE, Director, Whitechapel Gallery, London said:”The Whitechapel Gallery has always pioneered world-class artists and we are delighted to realise a new exhibition in the Gallery at Windsor. I see Beatriz’s work as orchestral, with circular elements interweaving to form a symphony of colour and shape. The titles of her work are in themselves a form of poetry. To show these alongside archival materials and the beautiful artist’s books gives the show a further dimension. Art historical echoes are both European and Brazilian – we can see Milhazes as the inheritor both of artists such as Matisse and Sonia Delaunay, as well as the Brazilian Tropicalia movement. The different forms of her work will be enhanced by the fantastic light of the gallery and the beautiful landscape surrounding it.”

The exhibition will be on display from December 3rd, 2011 through February 28th, 2012. The opening of exhibition conincided with Art Basel Miami Beach. A catalogue of the prints will be produced and will feature a statement from JP about his working relationship with Beatriz and the process they have created and utilized to make this incredible body of work. Individuals and small groups of 10 or less are invited to tour the gallery, with all tours scheduled by appointment only. Art Basel Miami Beach

James Nares unveiled his new film Street at Paul Kasmin. The film was recently completed and features music by Thurston Moore. Mickalene Thomas had paintings and photography at Lehmann Maupin, Rhona Hoffman and Susanne Vielmetter. Sperone Westwater exhibited Emil Lukas‘ string and larva paintings. Hurvin Anderson had two paintings in Thomas Dane’s booth.

Around Miami

Foundation Cartier presented Aquarium by Beatriz Milhazes in a temporary space in Miami. The mobile is comprised of over 14,980 carats of diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and rare jewels.

Durham Press will be exhibiting at Art Maimi from November 30th through December 4th. The fair is open from 11am-7pm Wednesday through Saturday and 11am-6pm on Sunday. This Thursday, November 17th, at 6pm there will be an auction at Sotheby’s New York called Art for Africa. The works in the auction, generously donated by contemporary African and American artists, will support the Africa Foundation primarily in its efforts to improve the lives of many orphaned and vulnerable children across Africa, through education and healthcare. The Africa Foundation has been hard at work in more than 50 communities across South and Eastern Africa for 19 years – “Empowering communities through conservation.”  Mickalane Thomas and Durham Press have donated one Mickalene’s incredible prints, Landscape Majestic, to this auction and I hope you will take some time to look at all the great lots at the auction and consider supporting it!

Hurvin Anderson, Welcome Series: Black and White, 2011, 38 x 58 3/4 inches, Woodblock and Screenprint with Wallpaper Relief, Edition of 30

Hurvin Anderson was working in the Durham Press studios for two weeks this October. He was here to sign his most recent print Welcome Series: Black and White - a beautiful woodblock and screenprint with wallpaper relief printing – and he also began working on a colorful variation of the same image, that should be complete next year.

Hurvin has now created 4 projects at Durham Press. The first print created by Hurvin is Barbershop Print , which is a woodblock and screenprint created in 2010. Mrs. S. Keita was the second project to be completed in 2010 and is a series of 8 multicolored screenprints. Central Range, another beautiful screenprint and Welcome Series: Black and White – both were created and completed in 2011.
