Beatriz Milhazes opened her exhibition at the Beyeler Foundation in Switzerland this past Friday, which runs through the end of April. The exhibition features four glorious, large-scale paintings, several collages and a new mobile. The paintings, which were created specifically for the exhibition, were themed after the Brazilian seasons – Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring. This is a new direction for Milhazes, who usually does not plan her paintings in advance. The paintings employ her signature technique of layering motifs that have been painted first on plastic foil and then pressed/printed onto the canvas. The collages are made from a combination of candy wrappers and brightly colored papers, arranged with incredible detail. The mobile was developed from her work on her sister’s stage sets (Marcia Milhazes) using the decorative materials used in Carnival floats.

The Gold Rose series of prints and the two small prints, Piquenique and Balon Bleu, were our most recent prints created with Milhazes. Printmaking continues to be a large part of Beatriz’s interests and a process she finds very enlightening and engaging.  The Milhazes exhibition at the Beyeler Foundation runs from January 29th until April 29th, 2011.
